The first time I met Whitney Kerney also happened to be the first time I met Janee Barbre, blogger and creator of Creative Girl Hangout. We were attending the networking event The Lipstick Lineup hosted by the sisters of Layllah and I immediately hit it off with them for two reasons:
- We’re all from Florida.
- Creative energy is pretty magnetic.
Over they years Whitney‘s growth in her creative and personal endeavors has magnified, thus leading to her found the creative service studio WK Creative. She has always been passionate about creating content, and is now sharing her keen eye for style and detail with other content creators. I was granted the opportunity to talk with her about the journey that has led her thus far:
WK Creative came about from my love of marketing. Having a small business previously, I did all of my own branding and marketing and in doing so, I just fell madly in love.
When a client reaches out to WK Creative, what are some steps that you take to create content that is on brand for the client?
When a client reaches out to me, I ask them a series of questions, a “branding questionnaire,” just so I can get a feel for what their style is and to get a better understanding of what they’re looking for. Once they answer the questionnaire, I get busy with creating them a “brand style guide” so we can establish an “aethestic.” I strive to be very attentive in my work by taking the time to get to know my clients all the while, still being courteous of their time.
When creating, where do you draw inspiration from or do you have more of a natural process?
It’s a little bit of both! I’m absolutely IN LOVE with Pinterest but really I draw most of my inspiration from the world around me. People and style really inspire me. When it comes to creative direction, I draw a lot of my inspiration from driving, believe it or not. That’s where I get most of my ideas from. The “text to talk” option and having bluetooth speakers in your car REALLY come in handy when you think of an idea and you need to jot it down, but you’re in the course of driving and you need to be safe, haha.
#GIRLSWHOSELFCARE was never in the business plan of WK Creative, it was just something that fell heavily on my heart to bring forth and manifest. All I knew was that I wanted to use my own experience to help other women that might be facing or have faced similar trials in their life. I wanted to use my experience as an opportunity for growth and healing.
#SelfCareSunday, duh! – no but, Sundays are the beginning of a new week. I always loved Sundays because it starts a new week; I always like to view it as a second chance. You have a fresh week, a fresh start – new week. New mindset. New goals. New opportunities. The possibilities are endless! What better way to start your path to healing than to do it on a day that starts something new?
Time management and a lot of planning. Task managers/applications and planners are my best friend. I can’t stress the importance of time management enough, haha. But, the number one way I balance everything is having a self-care routine down. Doing my morning and evening rituals is really what keeps me balanced in all aspects of my life. I truly believe when you take care of yourself, everything else comes easy. When you feel good, everything else feels good too.
Looking back over the years, when did you first realize that you wanted to turn your creative hobbies into actual endeavors?
I’ve always known since I was a little girl that I wanted to create for a living, but it took me years to really go for it because of fear. It’s crazy how much fear can have an impact on your life and your goals.
What are some things that we can look forward to from WK Creative and Whitney Kerney in the next couple of months?
I don’t want to spill the beans too much but we have a lot of exciting things coming up within the next couple of months and going into 2019. I’ll just say we have two parties coming up in September but that’s all I’m spilling. You’ll just have to wait and continue to follow and keep up with us.
