People With Acne-Prone and Sensitive Skin Can Wear Makeup Too

Yes, you read that correctly. There is makeup for those of us who have sensitive skin that may be prone to breakouts, rashes, and more. Someone heard that certain ingredients irritate our skin and created things that work. Let’s have a moment of silence for this recognition please.

All jokes aside, I truly wished the brands I’m sharing with you today existed 5-10 years ago. The amount of money I’ve spent on low and high-end brands is astronomical. I don’t even want to think about it outside of telling you I went through a lot of trial and error.

As I mentioned in my skincare post, I have combination skin which means my skin does all of the things. That’s AAVE for “I have dry and oily skin along with large pores. So, blackheads, whiteheads and hyperigmentation are familiar with my face.” I wish I had pictures from my late teens and early twenties to share because the journey has been full of peaks and valleys.

So, being that my skin is sensitive, it took a while for me to start looking at the ingredients in makeup. It actually wasn’t until 2019 that I realized I should use a foundation that isn’t harsh on my skin. Again, I spent so much money trying different brands until my pockets and brain became fed up. I mean, it felt like a never-ending journey to find something that worked for my skin.

But lo and behold, a makeup brand emerged through the murky mist of confusion and defeat.

It’s name? Range Beauty. Not only is it based out of Atlanta but it’s also a black owned beauty brand. That’s not what intrigued me though. It’s the fact Range Beauty’s founder, Alicia Scott, specifically created this brand for people who have eczema or acne-prone skin. Heavy on the specifics. What’s even better is that she identifies with both skin issues. Do you know what it’s like to feel seen in that manner?

Range Beauty True Intentions Foundation - Shade Moon Dust (Yellow undertones)

No? Well, let’s jump into the ingredients found in the True Intentions Hydrating Foundation. If you’re not familiar with eczema or consistent acne, the skin is inflamed in different areas. This can be due to genetics, pollution, excess oil in pores, allergic reactions, etc. What this foundation does is work to soothe that inflammation via ingredients such as Calendula, Chamomile and Green Tea. Not only that but the Kaolin Clay found in the foundation helps to combat excess oil. For someone who has combination skin like me, you know it doesn’t take much for our face to produce excess oil, especially

when we’re wearing foundation. What I love about the True Intentions Hydrating Foundation is that it truly (no pun intended) moisturizes my face and almost feels like it’s hugging it. I know that sounds like a stretch but I mean it. Also, I noticed less breakouts the more I wore the foundation. It’s been about 3 years since I was introduced to the brand and I can honestly say I don’t experience many breakouts anymore.

*I typically use this foundation during fall/winter so it’s time for me to order soon!

Kosas & Its Ingredients

Due to a rather unfortunate mishap involving my toddler (take a wild guess at what happens when small children find makeup), I was forced to find an emergency foundation. I was vehemently against doing so because I didn’t want to experiment anymore. However, I decided to speak to a beauty advisor at Sephora. I told them my skin concerns and she pointed me in the direction of Kosas’ Revealer Skin-Improving Foundation SPF 25. The name alone made me stop in my

tracks because I’ve never known a foundation to have SPF in it. After doing more research on the site (and TikTok - don’t judge!), I decided it was worth trying. Let’s just say my mind was blown away from the first use to the point where it’s a part of my summer makeup routine. It’s a medium coverage foundation that has niacinamide, squalene, and peptides in it. Did I mention that it’s been dermatologically tested? Um, hello! Count me in!

Wait, I need to back up. If you have no idea what those ingredients do for the skin, I’ll tell you. Niacinamide, one of the ingredients I use in my skincare routine, is great for helping to soothe irritated skin (think inflamed skin, large pores, hyperpigmentation, etc.). Within the foundation, it helps to act as a brightening agent. On the other hand, squalene helps to promote vibrant skin. Sometimes my skin takes on a dull appearance when it’s in a dry phase so squalene gives it a boost of hydration so it looks supple. And peptides promote elasticity in the skin to help give it a plumper appearance.
