Creating My Home Office

As a creative who spends her time writing, I always knew I wanted to have a home office. The problem is that I never seemed to have a clear idea of what I wanted it to look like. Did I want pops of color or the most minimalist decor I could find? These are the questions that haunted me until I decided to create a Pinterest board dedicated to all things home decor.

The inspiration

Prior to creating the energy for the office I have now, I thought it made sense to fill my space with one of my favorite colors - pink. This means there were 3 different shades of pink furniture that clashed in my old space. From a salmon velvet couch to a fuchsia velvet accent chair, it was clear that I still didn’t have a clue what I wanted my office to look like. So I stopped asking myself that question. Instead I asked myself:

“How do you want to feel when you walk into this office with creating in mind?”

That’s when the proverbial light bulb turned on. I wanted to create in a space that not only inspired me but also relaxed me. So, the first thing I did was choose the room that had ceiling-to-floor windows in it because I love natural light. Not only that but I always imagined myself creating in a room filled with sun or moonlight. I’m not sure if that’s a quirky writer thing but it makes sense to me.

From there, I decided to part ways with my mismatched seating and focus on ONE color that I felt drawn to - hunter green. I searched high and low for the perfect velvet couch and finally found one on Joybird’s site. Later, I realized that I’m drawn to the color green because it symbolizes renewal and growth among other things.

I may add a faux plant or two by the sofa but, for the most part, this office aligns with what I envisioned. Aside from the aesthetics side of things, I feel like the pieces in this room can easily move with me to my next space. As a renter, I’ve struggled with feeling at home in prior units but I decided to be intentional about the space I’m in now. I like to think my office is a reflection of that, which is pretty cool.

Perhaps what feels cooler is the fact my fiancé and I agreed that this is 1 of 2 rooms

we don’t have to comprise on, but I can admit his home decor tastes have rubbed off on me. It took me a while but I no longer feel like minimal furniture doesn’t leave room for the part of my personality that loves color. This explains the Royale Evergreen color of the sofa and even the mint green computer on my desk.

Modern Contemporary

I like to think my office falls along the lines of modern contemporary home decor given that certain elements are a fusion of the past and future. For example, I recently learned that my mom and biological dad used to have a salmon velvet couch when they moved into their first apartment in the early 80s. Learning about this solidified the fact that some things are not only innate but meant to be. The contemporary elements of my office are the more minimalistic furniture like the two bouclé chairs and white desk.

I’m looking forward to decorating the rest of our current space but I’m not rushing anything this time. I’ve learned the hard way that decorating a space so that it feels like home takes time. In the words of my stepdad, “anything worth having takes time.” I like to think I’m beginning to understand that as time goes by, especially when it comes to the home environment I’m building with my fiancé.
