Inspired by the ‘70s

I’m a ‘90s kid all day long but I can’t help but feel drawn to the fashion of the ‘70s. My aunts, uncles and parents grew up at different points during that time so I received plenty of style inspo from older pictures of them. Imagine being young and seeing pictures of your family members rocking afros, bell bottoms and platform shoes. And my family wonders why I love personal style so much!

Since it’s fall, I’ve found myself even more drawn to silhouettes inspired by the ‘70s. More specifically, I’ve broken up with skinny jeans and have begun wearing wide legged jeans. And don’t get me started on platform heels/boots. The point is that the energy of the ‘70s is what inspired a recent outfit I wore. It’s one I felt comfortable and cozy in without forfeiting my personal style. It was a win-win for me.

The Platform Heels

Between us, these shoes definitely deserve a paragraph dedicated to them. This is a purchase I was influenced to buy last year when content creator * shared them on her Instagram profile. They’re the type of shoe the looks good on everyone and seem to accentuate the calf muscles. Even if you don’t have muscles in your calves or thighs, this pair of platform heels will create the illusion of them. If you know me then you’re aware that I love the appeal of a good platform heel, especially if it’s chunky.

I have several in my closet, something I continuously receive a side eye for in my household, but I don’t care. They definitely remind me of the ‘70s, a time period I wasn’t fortunate enough to be born in. However, my mom has shared memories of the music and energy from that era. I guess it must have sounded appealing to me because here I am years later, charmed by the allure of a chunky, platform heel.

The Cardigan

I actually bought this cardigan from Lilly’s Kloset (same cardigan in brown) last year and almost forgot about it until I came across a knit coat on Zara’s site. I was tempted to buy it but decided to ‘shop in my closet,’ something I’ve been challenging myself to do a lot lately. Thank goodness I did because I would have almost had the same ‘coat’ in my closet. Sometimes I don’t mind buying multiple things in a similar pattern or texture but I feel like my cardigan is distinct enough.

It is a little long because it has an oversized fit so I’m probably going to get it tailored within the next couple of weeks. Aside from that, it’s a true cozy knit piece that can be wrapped around my frame if it’s a little too cool outside. Also, I love that the color is neutral enough to be worn with just about anything. That’s always a plus for me.

*I believe it’s currently sold out right now but I’ll let you know when it’s back in stock!

The Hat & Bag

I know. Not this hat again. Well, newsflash, I believe in getting my money’s worth which means I’m going to wear my hats many times over. All jokes aside, this hat felt like the missing piece to this outfit and completed the look I was going for. It matched the accent color on my bag and paired well with the platform heels.

By the way, I bought this bag ages ago and wear it for nostalgia purposes. I remember there was someone I used to follow on Instagram who had something to say about Michael Kors bags every chance they got. It made me feel so ashamed of my bag that I stopped wearing it for a while. Now I don’t care to hide something I bought because I like it.

When it comes to others’ personal style, here are a list of unofficial rules I follow:

  1. Life is too short to be a mean girl.

  2. I don’t care that much to tell someone who isn’t me I don’t agree with their sense of style. It’s called personal style for a reason.

  3. I’m here to enjoy this life as much as possible. The last thing I want to do is see a bunch of people who dress exactly like me as if we’re monolithic.

  4. Basically, leave people alone if nothing positive will be said. Figure out what’s internally wrong instead of worrying about how someone’s dressed.

That sums up my outfit and mini style philosophy! These days. I’ve been having fun watching my style feel more like me, even if I’m inspired by an era. It seems like something I want to keep doing.
