The Cargo Effect

It started with a pair of cargo pants that are long gone but remain embedded in my mind. Although I can’t remember the brand of them, probably Children’s Place, I also can’t forget how they made me feel. Sure, they made a bit of noise whenever I walked but I didn’t care. They were different from the pairs of jeans I loved and I figured out how to style them in various ways.

Somewhere along the lines I began to gravitate towards skirts and dresses but I never forgot about the magic of wearing cargo pants. It’s part of the reason I’m obsessed with the resurgence of the cargo trend. According to Vogue France, there was a 60% search increase for cargo pants in 2022. What I love is that the over style of cargo has expanded beyond pants.

As a 90s kid who came of age during the early 2000s, the refreshing take on this Y2k trend feels perfect for me. It’s the reason I could barely contain my excitement when I stumbled across this black denim cargo jumpsuit. Because it seemed like work wear took over my closet, I was apprehensive about whether I’d love it on me but the fit is amazing!

Did I mention that the pockets are functional? I don’t know about you but I love when pockets aren’t attached to something merely for aesthetics. These days I don’t always have the space to carry a huge bag so functional pockets are essential.
